Virat Kohli celebrates his record-breaking 52nd ODI century against South Africa in Ranchi, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time milestone.

Virat Kohli has once again made it to the list of cricket legends and this time via a century of 52nd ODI against South Africa during the opening match in Ranchi on Sunday. This new achievement has taken Kohli to the Penthouse of the list of male cricketers with the most centuries in one format, thereby surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's 49 ODI tons which was a long-standing record.
Kohli's century came through a knock of classic shots like cover drives; it was an outspoken and composed innings that yet again proved his top-notch talent and dependability in crucial matches. In addition, this was his 83rd century in the international arena keeping him very much in the race as the nearest rival to Tendulkar's legendary figure of 100 international hundreds.
Kohli Surpasses Tendulkar, Breaks Legendary Record
Prior to this encounter, Tendulkar and Kohli had been jointly holding the record for the most centuries scored in a single format. With his Ranchi feat, the 36-year-old not only crossed the threshold of the great batter but also reasserted his being among the best in cricket history.
Kohli also extended his dominance against South Africa, registering his sixth ODI hundred against the Proteas — the most by any batter, breaking a three-way tie with Tendulkar and Australia’s David Warner.
A Vintage Kohli Masterclass
Walking in early after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal, Kohli steadied the Indian innings alongside Rohit Sharma. His innings was marked by flawless timing, clever strike rotation, and calm control under pressure — a throwback to the peak years that defined his career.
Chasing 28,000 International Runs
Kohli now moves nearer to another significant milestone: 28,000 international runs. Just Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara have crossed this limit. Kohli was short of 337 runs to catch up with the elite list at the start of the South Africa series.
The pursuit is still very much on, with the same form, hunger, and history backing him up.
